Chapter 17

“Gwen what are you talking about? You know the rules. We cannot change without a supervisor.” Mia whispered at her, looking suspicious. She was right, but it was funny to have her worrying about that when we were all breaking rules at the moment and she never complained about it.

“Mia, you guys are in the boy’s rooms at night. If we are going to break any rules it must be today.”Chris said excitingly. “And besides, today is Kayla’s transition. She needs to at least know what is going to happen to her.” he said that as if he was trying to sell drugs. I guess he is not used to doing stuff like this. Dork.

“And besides, you will supervise me, and I’ll supervise you. Everything will be okay. Our animals are cool, except Lili, but if anything goes wrong, we have Rin to watch out for us.” Gwen said. She gave Mia the puppy eye, and she nodded defeated. “Yey, then let’s do this.” Gwen’s smile made her gothic stile seem out of place.

In a minute Hell appeared beside her. Chris was next, summoning Rex, and in the moment that the dog saw the bunny, he started growling. Chris, touched Rex’s back, and the dog turned all his attention to his master. So adorable.

 Mia reluctantly called Rin. I am not really sure if this was fine. Having a dog, a bull, a bunny, rhino, a gold fish and six teenagers in the same room was not the wiser decision.

Suddenly all the animals in the room became balls of light, but instead of being white, like before, it turned a slight blue, or more like a turquoise color. Then all of them went toward their master, and then embraced them. The lights started forming a shape of their own. The whole room was blinding and the surge that I had of closing my eyes was great, but I wanted to see this through.

 Gwen’s and Chris’s lights became smaller, and I could not see them anymore, as if they became the light themselves, and Mia’s and Derek’s got much bigger. The light started subsiding, an on their places were Hell, Rin, Lili and Rex. Except that I knew that it wasn’t just them, since all of their eyes now were a light blue color, almost white. It was almost scary, but in a beautiful kind of way. While everything was going on, Owen kept his eyes down, not once looking up to see what was going on.

Derek, inside Lili’s body, or Lili inside Derek’s- I was confused about how that worked- started walking toward me, and out of impulse I took a step back, remembering of how aggressive Lili had being just a moment ago. From nowhere the animal sat and began flapping its tail. Yeah, it is definitely Derek.

 All the other animals started doing some weird noises that I guessed was laughs. Suddenly all of them came towards me to rub me, making back flips and other tricks like that. Well, only Chris did that, because Mia trying, would not be a brilliant idea. In the middle of all of these animals I felt like snow white singing in the forest, with the birds and rabbits helping her clean and whatever. Right, if I was a princess I would definitely be Fiona. Now I just have to find my Shrek.

With that thought in mind, Mace’s face passed through my mind. For everyone in the academy, he was a master, a teacher, or a super-freaking-badass-hot-dude. Ok, no one had ever called him like that, but I knew that many people thought about him that way.

For me though, he was more like a partner. I knew that I was not on the same level as him, but I could trust him with anything, and there was no reason to doubt him. Unfortunately, I was aware that I was falling for him hard, and I had nothing to do about that. It was a mistake to stay that close to him, but I just didn’t want to stay away ether. I would enjoy the time I had with him, and when all goes down- and I knew it would- I would just stand back and say ‘fuck it. It was totally worth it.' The kiss we shared had been enough to convince me of that. and then, James was in my head. The kiss he gave me in the class had been very passionate. Urgh. Why?? Why did he have to do that? Not cool dude. Not cool.

When I came back from my deep thoughts, I saw that Derek and Mia had turned back, and Lili and Rin were together. Rin was playing with a basketball on the floor. Her movements were limited because the space left for her to move was very small, so she always ended up hitting something when she tried to change positions. Lili was watching her bored, but deep down, I could see a parental look of his part, like he was taking care of her every move.

Gwen and Chris were chasing each other. Or at least trying to. Gwen cold run graciously, but the dog, couldn’t find room to do it straight, so he made a mess in the room. I had no idea how no one came here to complain about it yet. When he passed beside me, dropping a book as he did, I grabbed him quickly and held close, petting him in the head.

“Ok guys, enough. You are making too much noise and we don´t want that, do we?” I asked them, and Gwen instantly stopped running and changed back. Chris started cuddling with me. He came closer, rubbing his head in my chest. Derek stood up and grabbed him by the scruff. 

“Stop with that, it’s not just because you are on your animal form, that you can feel up someone’s boobs. Trust me, I tried.” Derek said. I laugh at the thought of Lili trying to do something like that, and the poor girl running away terrified. But then my smile faded when I thought of what Derek said about what Chris was trying to do.

“Hey, not cool.” I said embarrassed, crossing my arms over my chest. Mia and Gwen started grinning, and when Chris changed back, he was a bright shade of red.

“So, changing the subject. I didn’t know the eyes changed color. That is good when you are trying to know what is a shifter of just an ordinary animal. How does it feel for you guys, when you are on your animal form?” I asked curious.

“Well, in the beginning it’s kind of weird, because it feels like you suddenly have two personalities, but then you get used to it.”Gwen said sitting with Hell on her lap.

“Yeah, but is nice to have him with you all the time. It’s hard to explain. You feel full. Complete. I don’t know. It’s like you were naturally like an animal, and you just find that out after you transform for the first time.” Mia laid on top of Rin, like she did the first time I saw her.

“You will see.  After tomorrow, you will feel different.  Some of your animal traits will be on you. Not physically of course. Just mentally.” Chris explained. “That’s why every master is kind of like their animals. Look at James for an example. His animal is a black panther. Naturally he is really impulsive and aggressive. Derek’s animal is a bull, so he is quiet when left alone, and very protective of his own, but god helps who messes with him.”

Actually this really made sense. I stood up fast, and stumbled back, feeling suddenly very sleepy. I looked at the clock and it showed 1:52 am. The time passed by really fast with them, and I didn’t really notice it until now. Eight more minutes and I would change right there. I got up.

“Guys, look at the time. I’ve got to go, I only have a few minutes left.” With that, Mia and Gwen also got up and headed my way.

“Ok, let’s go. We’ll talk later guys. Wish our birthday girl good luck.” Mia told the guys and went toward Rin, who turned into a ball of light and went inside of her. Gwen, holding Hell in one of her arms, waved to the guys and followed me out of the room.

We got there safely. We were very careful not to make any noise. We heard some steps and stopped under the stairs. When we heard the person walking away, we kept running quietly. At certain moment, I saw movement at our left, toward the glass that led to the garden. Griff stood there looking at us. We all froze at the same time. We were certainly screwed, and I wouldn’t have time to get to my room. Griff, without taking his eyes off me, bowed and kept walking. He then was out of vision. Was he giving us passage? Would he not turn us in? Hesitantly, I started walking again. When I was sure he would not come back with someone else, I called the girls, who were looking at each other as confused as I was, to keep going. No one else noticed us, even after Mia accidentally tripped on the stairs. When I reached my bed, I barely had time to lay down when I suddenly blacked out.
