Lucy and Natsu have been dating for a few months when they both realize it's not working out. They break up but remain friends. Lucy finds out Natsu has feelings for Lisanna. She talks to Master Makarov and decides to let Lisanna take her place on the team so she & him can begin dating.
Lucy also decides to join the newly reformed guild exchange program in hopes of becoming stronger. Makarov agrees and she is assigned to Sabertooth with the special job of helping Sting reform the guild and teaching him how to run a guild. She agrees and sets off for a one year program. She will return home every other month for two weeks to report to her master and after one year she can continue the program or graduate.

Lucy is the youngest child and only daughter of Layla and Jude Heartfilia, she has an older brother named Sing, but the moment she was born her father and brother ignored her. She only had her mother, who loves her very much. When Lucy was 4 years old, Layla decided to move Lucy to a better location so that the little girl could have a better childhood. That location being the town of Magnolia, Layla meets a nice man named Akito Strauss. He has 3 kids and is also going through a divorce; they see something in each other that their first partners didn't see in them. Lucy sees Akito as her father and his kids as her siblings, since her biological father and brother neglected her entire childhood that she lived in the manor.
