A história se passa logo após o Kingdom Hearts II, ilustrando assim uma possível continuação para a série. O enredo é contado pelo personagem Sora, como um adulto. Passados vários anos, ele acorda em um lugar desconhecido, sem suas memórias de acontecimentos recentes, apenas com uma moto, uma tenda, uma mochila e sua fiel companheira Keyblade: a Kingdom Key. Porém esta se encontra diferente, e não só ela, mas como também a situação atual. O que é aquela torre prateada lá no fundo? Porque neste local não se encontram pessoas, apenas morte? Sora se sente atraído para lá, e sente que algo de revelador vai acontecer em relações as suas memórias, O que será que aguarda a Sora?

Naquelas terras misteriosas, tão distantes de Eorzea, um reino sofre com a depressão de que as coisas irão piorar, que as profecias ditas pelos mais velhos irá se realizar, mas existe a fé, entregue pelo próprio rei que se buscassem ajuda, tudo poderia melhorar, mas há quem acredite nele, a maioria dirá que isto só iria aumentar e mesmo na persistência de sua majestade, grupos radicais passaram a existir e aos poucos o caos tomava conta do reino em rebeldias.

Mas deve existir algo por trás de toda esta depressão, algo que só a luz pode clarear... Cabe a um quarteto de aventureiras a descobrir se conseguirão ou não executar esta missão.

Esta história se passa após os eventos de A Realm Reborn. Mas não se preocupe, os conceitos importantes serão apresentados durante o desenvolvimento da trama sem que necessite ter conhecimento do jogo.

Especially when he finally decides to leave his world behind and go to a deserted island. Or at least he thought it was until he finds out that there is someone who is to cursed with the same fate. A young girl with the power of many and nothing to hold her back from using it. But all that changes when Cloud finds himself falling in love with the girl who is said to be the bringer of death. And now he has someone to protect and a curse to finally destroy.

But can he really do it without taking her life? Or will he too succumb to the darkness that is starting to take hold?
