Capítulo 9 - 6 - Alone

Soterios - POV:

I trudged along holding onto Cain's arm. "I don't like this," he cried, "When is mommy coming back?"

I gritted my teeth at the question.

"Where is she Soterios?" he continued. I clenched one fist as i heard the second inquiry.

"I want to see mommy!" he screamed.

With this I lost my patience and I spun around, slapping Cain across the face. "I told you she's never coming back god damn it!" I exclaimed. I grabbed him and we walked on in silence.

2 months ago we were left that night alone, deserted by our mother.

"Look in the alley!" one of the mob's people had exclaimed.

"It's the dragon's kids," one said looking at us.

"Should we kill them?" a third inquired as some raised their weapons.

"No!" an elderly man commanded. The men lowered their tools and gave way for the old man. "These children are innocent. They shouldn't be forced to pay for their foolish mother's actions. As long as they cause the town no harm, they shall be considered one of us. We should pray that the Lord forgive them for the unfair conditions of their birth," the old man broke out into a speech.

Fast forward to today and things have hardly changed. We were given our old house but no one bothered to repair it. It remained a mess inside and out, most of our stuff from before was destroyed or burnt. I spent countless days and nights of toiling to return our home to an inhabitable state.

With no aid from the townsfolk, i had resorted to stealing in order to get the funds needed for our necessities. Whenever we stepped out to walk around or to go to the market for food, we were scorned and looked down upon by the adults. We were forced to leave school because of the bullying and ridicule of our classmates and people we once called friends.

Whenever we walked past, the adults would move away and we could often hear them tell their offspring, "Stay away from them," or "Don't look at those kids." We were young and we were quite unaware as to why the townspeople treated us this way. In fact their children didn't seem to know either as the adults had apparently been forced to keep the secret.

Is it any surprise then that i became very reserved. The only people I opened to were my own brother,Cain, and my best and only friend, Csilla. Csilla had stuck with us through thick and thin, even disobeying her parents' wishes to not see us. She would always come spewing some rubbish about becoming the strongest female knight for the King's army in Oakhevia.

One day when i was 7 and Cain was 6, a travelling circus had pulled into town. One of their activities involved placing one's hand on a magic crystal which found their magic potential and subsequently their compatibility to join the circus. Out of curiosity i decided to join the fun. As I approached the ball i wondered, What if I am compatible? Can I get a good life for Cain and me?

I placed my palm on the ball and everyone watched in surprise as the ball sped through the entire spectrum of its indicatory colours. "Clink!" the device exploded shooting glass in all directions. The Circus Jester looked dumbfounded and his jaw hung ajar.

"So much power," he muttered wide-eyed.

Less than a week later, a carriage of the Magic Council pulled up in Ironhaven. A man stepped out and opening a parchment reads, "The Magic Council has requested you relinquish ownership of Soterios and Cain Angus to them." Cain and I stared at each other and stepped into the carriage. We looked as a teary Csilla waved us good bye.
